“The importance of showing children from diverse ethnicities in my illustrations simply as a matter of fact, whether pertaining to the story or not, seems self-evident to me. In A Wild Cowboy and its successor A Brave Spaceboy, I created an interracial family at the center of the story. It’s something I can relate to. Although the FAMILIES race is never mentioned or alluded to by the author, it just seemed to fit perfectly. So many cowboys were African American, and Chinese Americans played an important part in the expansion of our country.

I am fortunate in that I’ve known since I was five that I wanted to illustrate children’s books. Although I did get sidetracked for a few years I managed to eventually get back on track.”
