ABSTRACT
Hamilton was born in southern Ohio, Yellow Springs, where her maternal ancestors settled after the Civil War. John Rowe Townsend, in Written for Children, describes Virginia Hamilton as “the most subtle and interesting of today’s Black writers for children.” Hamilton’s books have always centered on Black heritage and more personally on her own family history. Her themes go beyond family experiences, weaving mysticism, fantasy, and realism.
