Film fills in the imagery for you more than theatre does. In the theatre, a man and a woman can be alone on an empty stage talking and it is their words that provide the imagery, which is seen by the audience in their imaginations but not literally on stage. In film, though the imagery can be abstract and fantastic, it is usually completed for you.
