YOUMANS, VINCENT (1898-1946) · Vincent Youmans was the quintessential twenties composer. His shows dominated the decade. Th e closest competitor was George Gershwin, who was born one day before Youmans. Jerome Kern also provided scores to many fi ne shows in the twenties, including the greatest of his career, Show Boat. But Youmans imbued his music with a drive and rhythm that seems to defi ne the decade, its spirit, its speed, and its humor. Zelda Fitzgerald even gave a nod to Youmans in her novel Save Me the Waltz.
