ABSTRACT

Th e research is clear that mental problems, including personality disorders, can greatly aff ect children and the family dynamics. It may seem unfair, but those who have been diagnosed with a psychotic or a severe personality disorder would be disqualifi ed for a foster or adoptive placement because parents who suff er from these disorders are more likely to put their children at risk. Th ese children may be forced to “take care” of the parent, to suff er neglect, and to be left without the parental guidance and emotional support they need.
