ABSTRACT

Pierre Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, waited anxiously for the jury to return with the verdict. He had been overseeing the trial of Joan of Arc for two days and was sure the verdict would be rendered soon. He wondered if the riveting testimony given by Nicolas Loiseieur would convince the jury that she was guilty of heresy or if they would be convinced by those that testied in her defense. As the jury led in, the murmur in the courtroom dissolved into silence. “Have you reached a verdict?” Bishop Cauchon asked the jury foreman.
