ABSTRACT

The focus in Parts II and III was on patterns of teenage behavior and variations in these patterns. The theory of status relationships was used to explain the patterns and variations observed. Here the level of analysis shifts . The focus is on the link between teenage status systems and the broader society-and more specifically consumer capitalism. Before I proceed, a brief discussion of the nature of contemporary capitalist economies is required .
