ABSTRACT

African American males have the lowest level of college graduation, the highest unemployment rates, the lowest marriage rates, disproportionately higher death rates for some of the nation’s 10 leading causes of death and the shortest life span in comparison to White males and females, and African American females. They make up approximately 6% of the American population, yet they comprise 41% of the prison population and they die disproportionately more than other groups from homicide.
