ABSTRACT

Jeffrey M. Humphreys (2002) from the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia has estimated that African American spending power has increased from $308 billion a year in 1990 to over $531 billion a year in 1999, a near 73% increase. The median income for African Americans in the year 2004 was $30,100 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2006). While their poverty level dropped from 31.9% in 1990 to approximately 24% in the year 2004 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004 & 2006).
