ABSTRACT

The popular song sung by Tina Turner in the mid-eighties asked a critical question: What’s love got to do with it? Although the question of what’s love got to do with it was thematic in the eighties, prior to that in the seventies the popular song was Where Is the Love? by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. These songs and the questions they pose indicate how things can change, as it regards love in relationships. What’s love got to do with it? It has everything to do with it. However, it depends on the type of love. People have different ideas about love and this affects their expectations and how they approach it. Our different ideas about love stem from our early experiences with parental love, broader cultural ideals about love and romance, and different experiences throughout the course of our lives. It is important to examine the role that each plays in how we approach love. Let’s begin by exploring different approaches to love.
