ABSTRACT

Pet loss affects not only pet parents but all people who work in the animal care profession. Like a pebble dropped in a pond, the ripple effect created by the loss can touch police, firefighters, veterinarians, their staff, humane society workers, groomers, pet shop employees, zookeepers, wildlife and domestic animal rescue volunteers, and animal trainers. It is well documented that any professional who works with animals is at risk for developing emotional attachments to them. All are vulnerable to experiencing grief and loss when the bond is broken with animals in their care.
