ABSTRACT

ALL SPIRITUALITY IS PARTICULAR. It takes place in a particular context:in a particular location (including its own geography and climate), a particular historical setting (including its political, economic, and social elements), and a particular culture (including its language, symbols, myths, and values). These are the factors that influence and shape the development of spiritualities alongside the dynamics of faith. What is being referred to here is the spirituality of place. Some people may think a spirituality is best explored through studying the writings of its significant figures, prayer practices, rituals, theologies, and so on, but as we will see in this chapter, geography, climate, culture, politics, and other factors, all play a role in the study and shaping of Christian spiritualities as well.
