ABSTRACT

In the fi nal report on the International Year of Sport and Physical Education, the United Nations (2006) suggested that countries on every continent are starting to promote physical education (PE) as a way to establish a foundation for more peaceful societies. In this chapter we argue that PE programmes can be used to promote positive youth development (PYD) in confl icted developing nations. Ultimately, by using PE to promote PYD, we suggest that it may be possible to obtain the goals of peace education. Our intention is to highlight what physical educators can aspire to achieve on behalf of children and youth, and what our contribution to schools and the children who attend them, and their communities, can be. Specifi cally, in the present chapter we focus on the role of quality physical education (QPE) in promoting PYD and peace education.
