ABSTRACT

Hayden White (1928-) was born in Tennessee and is an American intellectual and cultural historian associated with a narrativist view of history. He earned his BA from Wayne State University and his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1956. He held academic positions at the University of Rochester, University of California at Los Angeles, and Wesleyan University. In 1978, White became a professor in the History of Consciousness Program at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He was Presidential Professor of Historical Studies and is now University Professor Emeritus.
