ABSTRACT
The title of this book requires answers to two questions: what are the ‘medical humanities’? What light can they shed on the practice of medicine in general and bioethics in particular? In this chapter we shall suggest preliminary answers to both questions as an introduction to the more sustained discussions in the rest of the book.
