ABSTRACT

When at last I finished writing the paper I would give at ‘Critical Architecture’, I was

called away from my desk. I had not saved what I had written and returned to find my

application had quit unexpectedly. On restarting my computer, I found an empty docu-

ment. I had to reconstruct from memory what I think I wrote, though I knew it was not

what I had written. Perhaps this is what underlay the two works I described. Without

text, without images (or only two anyway), with only six books remaining from the first

work, ‘Memoirs’ (though there may be others in circulation or even on bookshelves

somewhere in the world), and a book that might not be published due to a budget cut

or change of local government in the mairie of the town where I made the second

work, ‘Cela aura déjà eu lieu’ (‘It will have happened already’), what real chance do I

have to prove events happened, with certain effects? How am I to remember them?
