ABSTRACT

Over the years, Japanese multinational corporations (MNCs) have increased in both number and the extent of their overseas operations. According to the World Investment Report 2005 (UN 2005), 4,149 MNCs, or 8.2 per cent of MNCs from developed countries, are headquartered in Japan. Among the world’s top 100 non-financial MNCs, ranked by foreign assets, nine are Japanese MNCs. And Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry reports (METI 2005) that the overseas sales of Japanese MNCs increased 1.5 times in the ten years from 1993 to 2002.
