ABSTRACT

All forms of art organisation involve management systems, whether managing materials, arts funding distribution, or managing knowledge. It may seem obvious that the study of management organisations will have something to contribute to our knowledge of art production and the various activities which make up the art world, like corporate patronage or the private art markets. My argument in this essay, however, is that the study of organisation goes to the heart of the central problematic of contemporary art, and that central problematic is the nature of aesthetic value.
