ABSTRACT
This chapter will focus on the importance attached to the development of town and village enterprises (TVEs) that received emphasis in the studies undertaken as a part of the ‘European Project on Chinese Modernization: The Change of Cultural and Economic Patterns’ which began in the early 1990s. Therefore, it is necessary to make an analysis of the development of TVEs by linking with the concept of guanxi community discussed in Chapters 2, 3 and 6 because guanxi rules and regulations play a signifi cant role in supporting TVEs, especially in the initial stage of their development.
