ABSTRACT

Following Meyers's adaptation of anthropologic methods to biblical concerns, let us briefly the ethnographic strategy of what James Clifford and George Marcus have termed writing culture. In the text of Exodus 15 the elements of warfare-the horses, the riders, their armor and their shields, the chariots-point toward a male culture. If as Meyers argues, there were communities of female performers, might they not have been rejoicing in the destruction of the dominant male culture, exemplified by and encoded within the language ofwarfare?
