The election of 1944 was only the third to take place during wartime. In December 1941, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the u.s. entered World War II. President Franklin Roosevelt made it clear that the war effort would supersede the New Deal, telling reporters that "Dr. Win-the-War" was replacing "Dr. New Deal."
