ABSTRACT

The convention proved to be one of the most acrimonious and self-destructive in histor-y. The Youth International Party;or Yippies, a group of antiwar protesters, gathered to demonstrate against the party of Lyndon Johnson. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley assembled a large phalanx of police officers to contain the protesters, and for days the demonstrators and the Chicago police clashed in the streets, culminating in a brutal confrontation on nomination night. A national television audience watched in horror as police viciously beat demonstrators and dragged them into police vans.
