ABSTRACT

S inge the 1954 supreme court decision in Brown v. Board of Education of the City of Topeka, Kansas, which declared segregation in the public schools unconstitutional, the education of African Americans has generated continued debate and controversy. Desegregation, integration, educational opportunity, and affirmative action have been the main issues for the public and for policymakers concerned with black intellectual empowerment. But other questions have been raised recently, generating much confusion and controversy. Many African Americans, previously committed to school integration, have now begun to challenge the merit of mixed schools and common curricula to advocate Afrocentric approaches and allblack academies for young men.
