After the Fire

While in the West Firt is seen primarily as a lesbian movie, in India and among the Indian diaspora the film takes on more complex meanings, participating in related but distinct debates about representations of Hinduism, the influence of the West, standards of obscenity, and the role of women in the family and in society. Critics who want to discuss in the Indian media the politics of lesbianism and its representation must firsr establish female homosexual relations as a topic separable from these other concerns. But these critics, homophobic and otherwise, inevitably return to the connections between lesbianism and other issues, demonstrating that no single aspect of the film can be entirely separated from the work as a whole, indeed from the larger political and economic relations in which it circulates.
