Lucy Ware Webb Hayes

At first Maria Webb and her children continued to live near her family in Chillicothe. Her father, Isaac Cook, a state legislator, promoted state-supported schools and was a temperance advocate. He successfully urged Lucy and his other grandchildren to sign a pledge to abstain from using alcohol. Among Lucy's early teachers was a Miss Baskerville, who refused her students recess, keeping them at their desks all day with only a short break for lunch. When Lucy invited her little cousin Joe to school one day, he misbehaved and Miss Baskerville started to hit him. "How dare you whip Joe," Lucy fearlessly cried out, "I brought him to school to visit, and you shan't touch him."
