ABSTRACT

On March 29, 1874, Lou Henry was born to Florence Weed Henry and Charles Delano Henry. The family lived in Waterloo, Iowa, where Charles Henry worked as a cashier at the First National Bank. Florence Henry had been trained as a teacher, but her husband's income was sufficient to support the family without her assistance. In addition, asthma made it difficult for her to work. Eight years after Lou was born, Florence and Charles had a second daughter, Jean. In 1884 the family moved from Iowa to California, where Lou enjoyed the active life of a tomboy. As a child, she spent much time outdoors camping and hiking with her father. The family found California ideal for Charles's career and Florence's health.
