Lou Henry Hoover
Lou was a persistent and dedicated student. After proving her mettle to her male colleagues, she completed the requirements for a degree in geology in May 1898 and graduated from Stanford University. Lou was one of the first women in the United States to earn a degree in geology. Mter completing her education, she searched briefly and fruitlessly for a job. However, she was not idle. The Spanish-American War first induced Lou Henry to participate in charitable activities. Her mother encouraged her to join the American Red Cross. She began by rolling bandages, but soon she was elected secretary-treasurer of the local chapter, giving her an opportunity to practice her leadership skills within a voluntary association.
