ABSTRACT

Exactly one week later, Chuck Berry found himself back in the St. Louis courthouse to be sentenced for violating the Mann Act. Once again, the black rock-and-roll singer found himself staring into the cold eyes of an 82-year-old white judge from rural Missouri who was in no mood for niceties. After a minute or two of preliminaries, Judge Moore, careful not to make the kind of overtly racist statements he had made a week earlier, tore into the defendant.
