ABSTRACT
Thome´ H. Fang (1899-1977), also known as Fang Dongmei, was one of the most creative contemporary Chinese philosopers. In synthesizing western and Chinese philosophy from the metaphysical point of view, he created an organicist system that emphasized “comprehensive harmony.” Fang characterized Chinese philosophy as a transcendent-immanent metaphysics and brought to his creative synthesis ideas of western philosophy that he found pertinent to understanding cosmic process and human nature. For Fang, Chinese philosophy had three commonconstituents: (1) a vision of pervasive unity or comprehensive harmony, (2) a doctrine of the dao, and (3) a raising of the human being into ever higher realms of existence.
