ABSTRACT

89. Briscoe, James R., ed. Contemporary Anthology of Music by Women. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1997. xii, 404 pp. ISBN 0-253-21102-6. An anthology of music by women of the twentieth century, intended for use in courses on women in music or general music history courses. A majority of the selections are in the class of art music, but there are examples of popular, country, jazz, and folk music too. Each selection is preceded by a prose introduction which contains information about the composer and analytical comments on the piece. This is a very useful anthology for anyone interested in music by living composers. It comes with a set of CDs that includes all examples from the anthology.
