Rise of American Indian Studies
Indians are still of popular interest to the American mainstream society. Recent scholarship and interest in American Indians is flourishing and people want to know more about Native Americans. Since the 1980s, movies like Smoke Signals (1999) and earlier films like The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and Dances with Wolves, (1990) along with the writings of native scholars such as Sherman Alexie, N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Silko, and others have accelerated public interest in Indians. Throughout the United States and in many foreign countries, curious people want to know more about American Indians.
