ABSTRACT

The steps of EFT are circular and additive. Therefore, Step 7 is discussed here in the context of Steps 5 and 6 that prepare clients for the relationship transforming risks they take in Step 7.

In Step 7, the therapist uses new emotional experience and expression to change interactional positions and restructure interactions. The processing of key change events in this step is necessary to produce a successful outcome in EFT. The completion of Step 7 for the morewithdrawing partner results in the Withdrawer Engagement Event wherein the previously more withdrawn spouse shares attachment needs and wants from a now-engaged relational position. This partner experiences and asserts a newly discovered intense desire for a safe and secure connection with the other partner.
