Embracing the Other: Teaching Empathic Skill
The Empathic skill plays two important roles in RE therapy. First, it anchors the RE dialogue process by reducing undesirable emotional reactivity and creating an atmosphere of safety that encourages the exploration of difficult relationship issues. Second, the Empathic skill is the principal tool for creating deepened mutual understanding and emotional connection in the couple’s intimate dialogues. Because teaching empathy also involves demonstrating it and having the couple practice it, it is advisable to allocate an entire session just to teaching the Empathic skill when following the Time-Designated format.
