Understanding and Treating Selective Mutism

Many childhood disorders exist that intrigue mental health and school personnel throughout their professional careers, many of which are rare to see and oftentimes frustrating to treat. Selective Mutism (SM) is one such disorder. Many times, children with SM are not identified until they enter social situations, such as school. This is often the case with these children because the demands to speak outside the home are not placed on them until they enter a school situation, with preschool and elementary school frequently becoming the identifying setting.
