Interventions for Health Problems: A Multisystemic Cognitive-Behavioral Approach

Chronic health problems are highly prevalent among children and adolescents. For example, common pediatric conditions, such as asthma, obesity, and recurrent abdominal pain each occur in an estimated 5% to 12% of the population (Centers for Disease Control, 1995; McGrath, 1990; Troiano & Flegal, 1998). Furthermore, the prevalence of chronic health conditions has doubled over the past 30 years, which may be due to improvements in early diagnosis and treatment and the survival of low birth weight infants as well as to an increase in environmental toxins and the emergence of diseases such as AIDS and prenatal drug exposure (Brown, 2004).
