ABSTRACT

As Americans, we generally don’t like to fix things until they are broken. The same is often true of marriages. Historically, government funding has been focused on fixing problems rather than on trying to prevent them. Using an auto maintenance analogy, they wait until the car is no longer running and then take it to the mechanic for expensive repairs. What we fail to recognize is that routine tune-ups allow most mechanics to catch serious problems before they occur and help to avoid more serious repairs later.
