ABSTRACT

W H A T IS A G O O D TEACHER? Much of a consultant’s work is with teachers. Here are two points to consider about this population. A 1998 study o f Tennessee teachers showed teachers have measurable effects on student achievement. This massive, statewide database has shown the effectiveness of the teacher as the m ajor determ inant o f student academ ic progress. The study shows “teacher effects on student achievement have been found to be additive and cumulative, with little evidence that subsequent effective teachers can offset the ineffective on es” (Sanders & H orn, 1998, p. 247). Translated into consultation terms, we may be seeing students who are still being affected, negatively, by prior ineffective teachers.
