ABSTRACT

Background We celebrate and uncertainly face the challenges of the burgeoning population of older people in the United States. Over a decade ago we wrote the chapter entitled Service Delivery Issues and Recommendations for Working with Mexican American Family Caregivers in the first edition of this volume and now are encouraged to report in this revision that considerably more literature is available on Mexican American and other Latino caregivers. In this chapter, the reader can expect the following: (a) an updated overview of the demographics on older Hispanic/Latino people and caregivers and how family caregivers are effected by caregiving responsibilities; (b) an increased understanding of the role of Hispanic/Latino families in care provision for relatives with dementia; (c) an examination of barriers to care and service needs; and (d) an exploration of issues of cultural competency and available resources for caregivers, service providers, and the general community.
