ABSTRACT

The previous chapter explored the two intertwined themes that give an identity to the c/s/x movement. The themes of Breaking the Silence and Ending Psychiatric Oppression reveal the important movement goals of claiming voice, gaining access to knowledge, claiming and protecting rights, challenging oppressive authority, exposing abuse, and creating choice by developing opportunities for alternatives and self-determination. We have seen how the continuity and change of the movement over its history reflect an interaction of these themes with the social, economic and political contexts of the times. In this chapter, the interplay of these themes in individual resistant identities will be explored.
