Rhythm-driven Optimization of Motor Control

In this chapter, we will present a mathematical model to show how the temporal structure of auditory rhythm can be used as a physiological template to cue the control of movement. We will present research into mechanisms by which the brain and nervous system might utilize temporally perceived information to regulate the planning and execution of movement. In particular, (1) an optimality criterion is presented that is derived from the constraint that a movement’s peak absolute acceleration is minimized, and (2) a mathematical model, based on recursion, is presented that accurately reproduces characteristic features of movement reported in previous research. In each case, it is shown that the period of both the stimulus and the movement dominates temporal correction of isochronous, metronome-driven movement, and that the application of a rhythmic driver shapes movement over the entire movement trajectory, rather than merely at movement extremes, where attempted synchronization with the rhythmic stimulus occurs.
