ABSTRACT

Introduction Psalm 100 was a gift to the University of Jena upon its granting Reger an honorary Ph.D. degree in the summer of 1908. Reger composed the fi rst of op. 106’s four movements in 1908, completing the work in 1909 and leading its full premiere in February 1910. Th e piece was given another performance on 27 May 1910, at the festival of the Allgemeiner

Deutscher Musikverein in Zurich. As with op. 74 at the 1904 festival, and with opp. 81 and 86 at the 1905 festival, Reger prepared an “analysis” of op. 106 for the program booklet, removed more than ever from any sort of serious discussion. Whereas in 1905 (essay 13) he had followed convention by merely quoting the main themes of opp. 81 and 86, here Reger invents a mock pseudotheme in 7/4 time, saturated with impossible chromaticism (note the triple-sharped c2 as the sixth tone).
