ABSTRACT

Quartet for Violin, Viola, Violoncello, and Piano op. 113 Th e work has of course four movements, which fact is founded in my penchant for musical discursiveness. Th e Larghetto (third movement) goes rather slowly; according to established custom, one of course ought to take the other three movements more quickly. But with this work one could do it the other way around — the music will sound terrible in either case. Th e key is D minor — for which extremely bold assertion I can assume no responsibility. It is pointless to reproduce the themes here, since they really never can be heard. A revered musical police is hereby notifi ed of the fact that in precisely this work — as unfortunately quite often — I have plagiarized to an appalling degree. Interestingly enough, however, I have refrained from fugues [Fugen] and other such mischief [Unfug].
