ABSTRACT

The prevailing view may be disdain toward study abroad as academically weak and functionally irrelevant, but alternative discourses do exist within the American academy. The vast majority ignores those marginalized voices. This chapter will explore the discourse of those faculty advocates of study abroad who see it as both an academically demanding experience and an important avenue for professional preparation. Involved faculty and administrators see a unique role for study abroad, too, as a form of education that can contribute to international peace.
