ABSTRACT
In the United States we like to think of ourselves as, at one time at least, being at odds with the world, in that we used to perform a great many of our operas in English. This is not as odd as it seems. As late as the early 1970s, German and Italian opera houses the size of the Hamburgische Staatsoper or La Scala still performed operas in translation.
