ABSTRACT

Three decades after J. L. Moreno's death, psychodrama has expanded around the world. During this time, it has often been observed that psychodrama does not appear to have its own underlying theory, and a range of psychological theories has been used to augment the theoretical basis of psychodrama. Moreno himself may be partly responsible for this, as he proposed action instead of theoretical ‘cultural conserves’. It is also true that external theories may be purposefully and beneficially adapted to psychodrama practice. In this chapter we explore these and related issues and describe how theory is embedded in the psychodramatic method.
