ABSTRACT

The previous chapter discussed the emergence of ‘visual sociology’, including an outline of my own video project, and other studies mostly from the 1990s. This chapter follows on directly, beginning with discussion of a few more selected recent studies. I then take a quick look at the related academic field of ‘visual culture’, and turn to projects which are similar to visual sociology but are conducted by artists, and/or take place in the public activities of art museums and galleries. Finally, I consider briefly what I learned from doing a study in which people were asked to produce drawings.
