ABSTRACT

Central to Design and Technology are the activities of designing and making. Consider all that is involved when you design and make something: subject knowledge, practical skills, research, generation and development of ideas, evaluation and testing, and more. Designing is a complex skill that involves communication, research and thinking skills of various kinds. Designers also need to understand values, have awareness of the needs of people and what effects a new product might have, for example, on the environment or on the local communities. When making, technical know-how and scientific knowledge are both appropriate, as are numeracy and being able to solve problems. Designing and making also require an ability to work with people. These are just some examples of the range of skills and knowledge involved in Design and Technology.
