ABSTRACT

This is the first of the chapters which focuses principally on deriving principles of good teaching. Logically enough, the first such chapter seeks a sense of direction by examining the aims or goals which underpin good teaching. The theme of the book is deriving principles and practice in good teaching from the stories of 62 award-winning teachers. Typical quotations taken directly from the stories will be used to explain and illustrate important concepts. The first of many such quotations is used at this point to justify taking the aims of teaching as a starting point. The quotations from Ballantyne, Bain and Packer (1997) are referred to as B B & P.
