ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the network of different reciprocal relationships that are such an important feature of the Reggio Approach. These include: relationships between children, supported by an emphasis on group learning; relationships with parents and the importance of parental participation; relationships between educators and the value of collegiality, co-operation and teamwork; relationships with the environment and resources; and relationships between the early childhood institutions and the community of Reggio Emilia. Respectful relationships lie at the heart of the approach to early childhood education in the infant-toddler centres and preschools of Reggio Emilia. The interaction between parents, children and teachers, and the relationships that are forged between them, are seen as essential elements in supporting young children's learning and development. Relationships are always considered to be reciprocal, requiring mutual trust and respect. Relationships are valued and supported through what is termed in Reggio the pedagogy of listening'.
