ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at developments in Reggio Emilia and the UK and finishes by summarising the key messages from the work of the preschools and infant-toddler centres which may help to guide our future thinking about early childhood. Jerome Bruner sees the success of the Reggio experience as arising from the fact that it is Small scale, high quality, under local control but with a universal set of values, thinking about the future. The Reggio Children organisation is involved in an increasing number of projects and professional development initiatives with colleagues throughout the world. Documentation is increasingly used as a means of making young children's learning more visible to parents, colleagues and the wider public, and experience and expertise in using documentation to guide children's learning is increasing. The UK reference point for Reggio Children is Sightlines Initiative based in Newcastle upon Tyne.
